Announcement | Two fellows selected to present at ASA 2024

Updated: Nov 24

Two FAR-LeaF fellows have been selected by the African Studies Association (ASA) and the Carnegie Corporation of New York (CCNY) to present papers at the 2024 ASA Annual Meeting. The ASA will host 10 Carnegie Fellows to present their work at the ASA’s Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois, 12–14 December 2024.

Drs Anna Msigwa of the Department of Water Environmental Sciences and Engineering at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology, Tanzania, and Dr Levy Otwoma, Senior Research Scientist at the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute Headquarters in Kenya, will be presenting their papers together with two other Carnegie Fellows on the panel entitled “Sustainable African Futures: Climate Change, Policy, & Innovation.”

This will be an excellent opportunity for the Fellows to network with an international, interdisciplinary group of scholars and inform others about their research:

Dr Otwoma will present his paper on Local Knowledge Corroborates Threats of Local Extinctions and Shifting Baselines in Kenya’s Exploited Reef Fishes. Dr Msigwa will present her paper on Remote Sensing and Machine Learning in Water Stress Detection, with an Emphasis on Applications in Maise Farming.

Founded in 1957, the ASA is a leading global association that promotes the study of Africa in all academic disciplines and for contemporary practitioners. It is a nonprofit organisation open to all individuals and institutions interested in African affairs. Its mission is to unite people with a scholarly and professional interest in Africa.

The ASA annually produces three periodicals and provides the Africanist community with information, resources, and outreach services. With approximately 2,200 domestic and international individual and institutional members, the ASA is the leading North American organisation that promotes African studies.

The Annual Meeting provides an occasion for panels, plenary sessions, discussion groups, exhibits, and films. Participants from North America, Africa, Asia, and Europe gather for this meeting, which is held in cooperation with major colleges, universities, and museums in different regions of North America. With an average attendance of over 2 000 scholars and professionals, the Annual Meeting is the largest gathering of Africanists globally.
