School gardens as practical learning platforms

  • 1 min read

Schools serve as dynamic platforms for promoting the consumption of nutritious food, with activities such as nutrition campaigns and cooking demonstrations reinforcing lessons drawn from the Competency-Based Curriculum. These initiatives are designed to positively influence children's nutrition behaviours while indirectly shaping broader family dietary habits, recognising the pivotal role learners play as agents of change within their households.

Following a survey conducted among learners in Endo Ward, Elgeyo Marakwet County, the need to establish school gardens as practical learning platforms for climate-smart agriculture was identified. The initiative is being piloted in Chechan, Chesongoch, Murkutwo, and Kabetwa Primary Schools, where the gardens are serving as demonstration fields for nutritious and climate-resilient crops such as orange-fleshed sweet potato and pigeonpea to improve household food and nutrition security. Through hands-on learning, school-going children are becoming ambassadors

of agricultural change by sharing agricultural knowledge and nutrition awareness with their families and communities. The initiative is building capacity among young learners while promoting sustainable farming practices, healthy diets, and resilient communities.
